It’s Full Steam Ahead at Nottingham’s Head Of Steam

You may have noticed quite a few foodie posts on here as of late and yep, here’s another one… I just like food OK?

Having been asked to pop down to newly opened Head of Steam on High Pavement, Nottingham, I thought it’d be just another grimy craft beer pub but I was mistaken.

It was quite the opposite actually with it’s contemporary interior and huge selection of drinks (including cocktails)!

I took Kane (my other half) along with me so he could try a few beers as I’m not the biggest fan. We were seated on the first floor where there was a large bar area, a relatively big carpeted area which could be sectioned off for parties or events and then a smaller eating area which is where we were seated.

After having a look round and taking all the smaller details in, we stuck our noses into the pretty hefty drinks menu. There were pages and pages of all the different types of beers, so many so that Kane was pretty overwhelmed and asked the waiter to surprise him with a blond lager or ale.

He ended up with Duvel which was a light, smooth beer with was of a pale colour. I chose a Louisiana Rum Punch which tasted like a sunset and was far to easy to slurp down.

We then got stuck into the food menu which had me drooling at almost everything I read. Having given up pizza for lent, I was more than tempted to break it, just to try one but something else caught my eye.

We had the Sweet Paprika Chorizos to nibble before our mains and NO WORD OF A LIE, they were the nicest, plumpest, juiciest little sausages of smoky goodness I had ever tried.

For a light bite, they were such a good size and we got to have 3/4 each which was such a treat!

We didn’t have to wait that long for our mains to arrive either which made me a happy lady. Once I’ve had a taste of food when I’m hungry, I just want to eat and eat and eat!

I opted for the Pulled Chicken, ham Hock & Sauteed Leek Pie served with mash, mushy peas, gravy and cripsy onions. Kane chose the Full Head of Steam Burger which had two chilli beef burgers, bacon, cheese and onion rings which was served with onion rings and fries.  We also had some Mac & Cheese Croquettes which I had been eyeing up on another table.

The pie, OMG the pie was just divine. The pastry was soft with a crunchy top, intensified by the crispy onions, the filling was steaming hot and packed full of flavour. The mash was buttery and soft, the gravy was rich and thick and the mushy peas, well, I was unsure of at first having only ever had them with fish and chips, pleasantly surprised me.

Kane’s burger was one of the biggest he’s ever tackled. He’s a meat man and sees the biggest burger on the menu as a challenger for him to demolish.

We’re converts to a medium rare burger and this was served just the way we like it, slightly pink, covered in cheese and bacon with a brioche bun; but this one had a twist with the chilli kick added to the beef patties. It was very different and having had a bite, I did like it but I’m not sure I could eat the whole thing, it certainly had heat. Me sat there dumbfounded, he managed to finish the bloody thing, with exceptions of leaving a  few fries and an onion ring. But that boy’s appetite never ceases to amaze me.

I couldn’t quite finish my pie but I made a triumphant effort at digging my way through it. It got to the point where I was like sleepy full and needed a lie down. It would be perfect with a pint on a rainy Sunday afternoon and you didn’t quite fancy a roast dinner.

I then needed a refreshing hit so I chose a Raspberry Chew cocktail and Kane had another lager which name escaped my mind…

I just simply can’t give a food review if I don’t try a dessert so I ordered myself a Strawberry & Rhubarb Cheesecake and Kane had the Profiteroles with Butterscotch Syrup.

The Cheesecake was light, fruit and went down a bit too easily. The Profiteroles were crunchy on the outside and fluffy on the inside with a caramel sweetness. Classic yet tasty.

Once we’d finished our desserts, I fancied my favourite after dinner drink, an Espresso Martini. He was still glugging through his pint and chose to stick with it.

The coffee concoction had the perfect balance of bitterness and sweetness which made it one of the best I’d ever tasted. I can get these down me in seconds but I chose to make it last at least a few minutes, savouring every sip.

We had made our way downstairs after polishing our three courses off, me heading off to the loo and Kane having a little taster class with the bar owner. On my return, he was preaching about how wonderful this beer he had tasted was and insisted I tried some. Hesitant as I was, I sipped a little and my mind exploded. It was this dark, fruity, Belgian beauty called Delirium Red and it has totally changed my outlook on beers. I could easily sit and drink it all night long. But at an 8% ABV, you’d be wrecked after 3 or 4 pints.

We then had to rush off to catch the bus but had the best night eating glorious, homey foods and trying lots of different beverages. I cannot recommend this place enough! You can even bring dogs too which I think makes it all the more cosy.
